Al-Dhabih
Definition
Al-dhabih — the sacrificed one — is one of Ismail's greatest titles of honor, referring to his willing acceptance of the divine command to be offered as a sacrifice. Though a ram was sent as a ransom at the critical moment, the title adheres to Ismail because the real sacrifice — the complete, willing surrender of self to divine will — was accomplished fully and unreservedly. Ibn Kathir presents extensive textual and logical evidence that the son commanded to be sacrificed was Ismail rather than Ishaq (Isaac), as some traditions hold. The title al-dhabih is not about what happened to Ismail but about the quality of his inner consent — a consent so complete that it earned him permanent honor across all subsequent generations.
