Preserving
the canon.
The classical Islamic scholarly canon — the tafsīr of Ibn Kathīr, the Iḥyāʾ of al-Ghazālī, the Riyāḍ of al-Nawawī, the Madārij of Ibn al-Qayyim, the Siyar of al-Dhahabī, the Riḥla of Ibn Baṭṭūṭa — and the thousands of canonical works of fiqh, hadith, sīrah, kalām, taṣawwuf, and adab that came before them — lived for a thousand years in Arabic.
A generation of English-speaking Muslims grew up hearing about this tradition but never hearing it. Joyful Muslims exists to close that gap.
Every canonical text, translated from the original manuscripts, narrated with care, released free — until the whole classical library lives in every pocket. Audio is the vessel. Preservation is the purpose.
Not a business — a cultural institution
Joyful Muslims is registered as a Danish company (EMV-registered, CVR 46387996) for the operational reason that every publisher in Europe needs a legal entity. But this is not a business in the ordinary sense. It is a preservation project with a subscription layer attached.
The goal is not to maximise revenue. The goal is to preserve the canonical scholarly tradition of classical Sunni Islam — every text that matters, in audio, in English, reachable by any Muslim with a phone, free forever at the floor.
How the economics serve the mission
Every month, every user gets five hours of free listening across the entire library. No credit card. No trial expiration. This is the permanent floor. We will never take it away.
Beyond the free tier, we offer two paid subscriptions. The revenue from those subscriptions does one thing: it funds the continued translation, narration, and release of new canonical works into the free library — until we run out of classical texts to translate. We won't.
The Vault — release cadence
New books enter the library through the Vault. Premium subscribers get instant access to each new volume on day one; every other listener receives the same volume, free, seven days later — no exception.
This is deliberate. It means the whole Ummah moves through the canon together, book by book, week by week — like a global study circle that happens to span every continent and language.
The canon we are preserving
The classical Islamic scholarly tradition is vast. The pieces we will translate, narrate, and release into the free library over time:
- Tafsīr — the commentarial literature of the Qurʾān. Ibn Kathīr is the beginning, not the end.
- Hadith — the six books (Bukhārī, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, Tirmidhī, Nasāʾī, Ibn Mājah), their commentaries (al-Nawawī's on Muslim, Ibn Ḥajar's on Bukhārī), and the themed collections (Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn, al-Adhkār, al-Targhīb wa al-Tarhīb).
- Fiqh — the foundational works of the four madhāhib and their classical commentaries.
- Sīrah — the Prophetic biography, from Ibn Hishām and Ibn Isḥāq through Ibn Kathīr's Sīrah al-Nabawiyyah.
- Kalām & ʿaqīdah — the creedal and theological canon (al-Ashʿarī, al-Māturīdī, al-Ghazālī's Iqtiṣād, al-Ṭaḥāwī's creed).
- Taṣawwuf & tarbiyah — the literature of the heart, from al-Muḥāsibī through al-Ghazālī's Iḥyāʾ to Ibn al-Qayyim's Madārij.
- Adab & tarikh — the manners, the letters, the histories, the riḥla literature.
Each category contains dozens of canonical works. A full lifetime of publishing ahead of us, one volume at a time.
What a subscription funds
- Original English translations produced in-house from primary Arabic manuscripts (Shamela-sourced, cross-checked against the major printed editions)
- Scholarly review of every translation before it enters the library
- Professional narration — voice actors briefed on Arabic pronunciation, Islamic etiquette, and the gravity of the source material
- The Living Manuscript — word-synced Arabic and English for every chapter
- JM Scholar — a study aid grounded in the library's own text, sourcing every answer
- The infrastructure to stream all of this, globally, at the free-tier floor, indefinitely
The promise
No book, once released into the free library, will ever be removed from it.
No feature available to a paying subscriber today will be taken away tomorrow.
The five hours of free listening per month will remain for every Muslim, for as long as this project exists.
We take this as a trust. That is the whole of the mission.
