Al-Judi
Definition
Al-Judi is the mountain upon which the Quran says the ark came to rest after the floodwaters receded — described as being in the region of Mosul in modern-day Iraq according to most classical scholars, though some identify it with Mount Ararat. Ibn Kathir accepts al-Judi as distinct from the Biblical Ararat and reviews the geographical evidence with his characteristic care for historical precision. The resting of the ark on al-Judi represents the moment of relief and the beginning of humanity's second chapter on earth — the survivors emerging onto dry land to start again, carrying with them the knowledge of what had happened to those who came before.
