Al-Yaqtin

Definition

Al-yaqtin — the gourd or squash plant — is the plant that Allah caused to grow over Yunus after the whale cast him onto the shore in a weakened, raw-skinned state. Ibn Kathir records that after the extended period in the whale's belly, Yunus's skin was extremely sensitive — unable to bear the direct heat of the sun. The broad leaves of the yaqtin provided shade; its fruit provided nourishment. Both healing gifts came without Yunus asking for them, and after his recovery he returned to his people and found — miraculously — that they had believed during his absence and their punishment was lifted. The yaqtin represents the divine tenderness that follows sincere repentance: not only is the person restored to mission, they are first given exactly what they need to heal.

As understood in the classical tradition of Ibn Kathir and the scholars of his school.
