Amīr al-Safar
Definition
The amir al-safar is the person designated as leader of the travel group — a practice the Prophet ﷺ recommended even for groups of three. Al-Ghazali presents this practice as an expression of Islamic social wisdom: even in small groups, clear leadership prevents the indecision, conflict, and paralysis that arise when everyone has equal authority and no one has final responsibility. The amir should be chosen for competence, fairness, and the ability to make decisions under pressure, and the group should accept their decisions generously — practising the virtue of following rightful leadership that the larger community also requires.
