Amr bil-Maʿrūf

Definition

Amr bil-Maʿruf is the obligation to actively promote righteous conduct — encouraging what Allah has commanded, facilitating correct practice, teaching what is required, and creating conditions in which good action is supported and enabled. Al-Ghazali insists that this is not passive approval of the good but active promotion: the Muslim who sees a correct practice being neglected and does nothing, when they have the knowledge and the capacity to encourage it, has failed in this obligation. The scope of amr bil-maʿruf is as broad as the scope of the maʿruf itself — everything that Allah has commanded or recommended.

As understood in the classical tradition of Imam al-Ghazali and the scholars of his school.
