Glossary Entry

Ārifūn

عارفون
Definition

Gnostics or those who truly know — referring in the Islamic tradition not to abstract philosophers or esoteric initiates but to scholars and saints who have moved beyond theoretical knowledge of Allah to a living, experiential nearness to Him. They know Him not merely through propositions but through the direct experience of worship, trial, dhikr, and the gradual purification of the heart. The ārifūn al-Nawawi describes throughout this book are recognisable not by ecstatic states or miraculous powers but by their profound humility, their consistent obedience, their gentleness with creation, and the sweetness of their presence to those around them — the fruits of genuine nearness to the Most Near.

As understood in the classical tradition of Imam al-Nawawī and the scholars of his school.
