Balwa
Definition
Balwa refers to the trials and afflictions that God sends to His servants as tests of their faith, vehicles of purification, and means of elevating their spiritual station. Al-Ghazali presents a profoundly counter-intuitive teaching: the most severe trials are often sent to the most beloved of God's servants, not as punishment but as refinement. The prophets suffered the most precisely because they were capable of bearing it and because their endurance would illuminate the path for all who followed. Understanding balwa as a form of divine attention — not divine rejection — is one of the key transformations that patience is meant to produce in the believer's heart.
