Buhtān
Definition
Buhtan is the gravest form of tongue-sin: attributing to a person a fault they do not actually have — fabricating a sin, a failure, or a flaw and presenting it as fact. Al-Ghazali notes that buhtan carries a double sin: the sin of lying and the sin of ghiba compounded. If backbiting (mentioning real faults) is like eating the flesh of one's dead brother, buhtan is like eating the flesh of a living one — the defamation of a person who has done nothing to deserve it. He places buhtan at the extreme end of tongue-sins and describes its Hereafter consequences in vivid terms.
