Bustān

Garden — the central metaphor of the book's title. Sacred knowledge, al-Nawawi suggests, is not a factory to be processed through efficiently but a garden to be entered with intention, tended with patience, and traversed at the pace of contemplation. A garden rewards those who slow down — who notice what is blooming, who sit with what is fragrant, who return in different seasons to find new beauty. The metaphor implies beauty, variety, seasonal change, and the kind of nourishment that enters slowly and sustains deeply. Al-Nawawi chose this image to signal from the outset the spirit in which the book should be read: not extracted from but inhabited, not consumed but contemplated.
