Duʿāʾ al-Safar
Definition
Duʿa al-safar refers to the specific supplications that the Prophet ﷺ taught for the various moments of travel: the supplication upon mounting a vehicle or beginning a journey, the takbir (Allahu Akbar) upon ascending high ground, the tasbih upon descending, the prayer upon arriving in a new place, and the supplication upon returning home. Al-Ghazali presents these not as empty rituals but as conscious orienting acts — moments in which the traveller acknowledges their dependence on Allah for every phase of the journey. The traveller who uses these supplications attentively is maintaining the remembrance of Allah throughout a journey that might otherwise be consumed entirely by logistical concerns.
