Definition
Fikr fi khalq al-samawat wal-ard — 'reflection on the creation of the heavens and the earth' — is the Quranic phrase al-Ghazali uses to name one of the primary and most accessible objects of beneficial tafakkur. The natural world — the sky, the earth, the human body, the movement of water, the growth of plants, the behavior of animals — is an inexhaustible source of divine signs available to anyone who looks with contemplative eyes. Al-Ghazali devotes considerable space in this book to guiding the reader through specific contemplative reflections on natural phenomena, showing how the thinking heart can move from observation to insight about divine power, wisdom, mercy, and unity.
