Ghaflah
غفلةHeedlessness — the spiritual state of forgetfulness of Allah that opens the heart to every kind of harm. Ibn al-Qayyim treats ghaflah as the root condition that allows all other spiritual diseases to enter and take hold. When the heart is heedless it loses its spiritual immune system: without awareness of Allah's presence, sin appears less serious, temptation becomes harder to resist, and the gradual erosion of the heart goes unnoticed until the damage is severe. Dhikr is the precise antidote to ghaflah because it restores the very consciousness that heedlessness destroys — and this is why Ibn al-Qayyim makes it the book's central theme.
As understood in the classical tradition of Ibn al-Qayyim and the scholars of his school.
