Ghishsh
Definition
Ghishsh is any form of deception or fraud in commercial transactions — concealing defects, misrepresenting quality, giving short measure, claiming false origins, or any other manipulation that leads the other party to enter a transaction on false premises. Al-Ghazali quotes the prophetic hadith: 'Whoever cheats us is not of us.' He is unambiguous: ghishsh is haram, it corrupts the earnings it produces, and the person who habitually cheats in trade is accumulating a provision that will poison their heart and compromise every act of worship they perform with it. The Muslim trader who is known for honesty is practicing one of the highest forms of daʿwa.
