Ḥadath
Definition
Hadath describes the state of ritual impurity that invalidates prayer and requires purification before worship can resume. Minor hadath — broken by wudu — is incurred through natural bodily functions, sleep, and certain other acts. Major hadath — broken by ghusl — is incurred by sexual activity and related states. Al-Ghazali explains that the concept of hadath teaches the Muslim that the natural demands of the body and the demands of worship do not simply coexist without negotiation — worship requires a deliberate act of reorientation, a conscious turning back toward the sacred state.
