Ḥalāl
Definition
Halal refers to what is permitted under Islamic law — the vast majority of things in the world, which are lawful by default unless specifically prohibited. Al-Ghazali cautions against treating halal as a simple checklist: something can be technically halal and spiritually harmful, or technically halal and socially unjust, or technically halal and produced through means that compromise the overall character of the Muslim. His concern is not to expand the haram category but to encourage a deeper engagement with the purpose behind the distinction — the protection of the heart, the community, and the relationship with Allah.
