Hayba
Definition
Hayba is the sense of overwhelming awe and reverential majesty that accompanies genuine awareness of God's greatness — a feeling of smallness before infinite grandeur that is not terror but a kind of exquisite humility. Al-Ghazali presents hayba and uns as two complementary experiences that the spiritually mature heart holds simultaneously: the awe of encountering the Majesty (Al-Jalal) of God, and the warmth of encountering the Beauty (Al-Jamal) of God. The heart that has experienced both knows a peace that is simultaneously trembling and at rest — awed by the infinite yet welcomed into intimate nearness.
