Ḥuḍūr al-Qalb
Definition
Hudur al-qalb is the first and most fundamental of the six inner conditions that al-Ghazali identifies as essential to a living prayer. It means that the heart is fully present — not wandering through shopping lists, replaying conversations, or planning tomorrow. Al-Ghazali acknowledges that this is extraordinarily difficult and that very few people achieve it throughout an entire prayer. But he insists that even a single moment of genuine hudur al-qalb in a prayer is worth more than a lifetime of distracted but legally valid prayers.
