Iʿjāz al-Qurʾān
Definition
I'jaz al-Quran refers to the doctrine that the Quran is miraculous and inimitable — that no human being or group of human beings can produce anything equivalent to it in literary quality, precision, and spiritual power. Al-Ghazali touches on this in his treatment of Quran recitation because he believes that genuine appreciation of the Quran's i'jaz transforms the act of recitation. The person who recites knowing they are engaging with a divine masterwork of infinite depth — not a human text that can be processed and set aside — will naturally slow down, pay attention, and approach each word with wonder.
