ʿIlm al-Muʿāmala

Definition

ʿIlm al-Muʿāmala is the knowledge of how to act correctly in both outward worship and inward spiritual states. This is the domain that the Ihya itself covers: the rulings of prayer and fasting, yes, but more importantly the states of the heart — sincerity, patience, gratitude, fear, hope, and love. Al-Ghazali considers this the most important category of religious knowledge for the ordinary Muslim, because it translates belief into lived transformation rather than remaining at the level of theory or debate.

As understood in the classical tradition of Imam al-Ghazali and the scholars of his school.
