ʿIlm al-Mukāshafa

Definition

ʿIlm al-Mukāshafa refers to the highest and most intimate form of spiritual knowledge — a direct, experiential unveiling of divine realities that comes only after the heart has been thoroughly purified. Al-Ghazali is careful to say that this knowledge cannot be written down or transmitted through ordinary scholarship; it is lived and tasted, not studied. The entire project of the Ihya, he argues, is meant to prepare the heart for this unveiling by removing the inner obstacles — arrogance, love of the world, heedlessness — that prevent it.

As understood in the classical tradition of Imam al-Ghazali and the scholars of his school.
