Islāḥ

Islah — the reform and rectification of society — is the primary spiritual justification for engaging with the world rather than retreating from it. Al-Ghazali argues that the Muslim who has the knowledge, character, and courage to command good and forbid evil has an obligation that seclusion cannot fulfil. The scholar who withdraws permanently from society, leaving the community without guidance and the corrupted without anyone to challenge them, has chosen their own spiritual comfort over the communal obligation that their knowledge creates. Islah is what gives engagement its highest meaning — the Muslim in the world not as an end in itself but as a servant of the community's moral and spiritual health.
