Ittibāʿ
Definition
Ittiba — following the Prophet ﷺ — is the practical implication of the testimony of faith that Muhammad ﷺ is the messenger of Allah. Al-Ghazali presents ittiba as the comprehensive programme of the entire religious life: every act of worship, every transaction, every social interaction, every moral decision is an opportunity either to follow or to deviate from the prophetic model. He argues that the Muslim who truly loves the Prophet ﷺ will find ittiba not as a burden but as a delight — the natural expression of love is to become like the beloved.
