ʿIzza
Definition
Izza — dignity and honour — is al-Ghazali's careful distinction from kibr: the Muslim should maintain genuine dignity and self-respect, refusing to be humiliated or treated with contempt, and holding their head up as a servant of Allah. This dignity is not the same as pride: it is not the claim of superiority over others but the refusal to accept a position of humiliation that dignity before Allah does not permit. The Muslim who maintains izza walks through the world with the quiet confidence of someone who knows whose servant they are — neither inflated by pride nor deflated by the need for human approval.
