Jamal wa Jalal

Definition

Jamal (beauty) and jalal (majesty) are the two poles of the divine self-disclosure in Islamic spirituality. God's names and attributes can be grouped under these two headings: the names of mercy, gentleness, generosity, and love belong to the dimension of jamal; the names of might, power, greatness, and justice belong to the dimension of jalal. Al-Ghazali teaches that a complete love of God encompasses both — not only the warm intimacy of the beloved but also the trembling awe before the Infinite. The hearts of the prophets held both dimensions in perfect balance, and the spiritual path is in part the journey toward that same balance.

As understood in the classical tradition of Imam al-Ghazali and the scholars of his school.
