Jannat al-Firdaws
Definition
Jannat al-Firdaws — the Garden of Paradise, particularly its highest level — is the ultimate destination that al-Ghazali describes in loving, careful detail as the practical destination of the entire Ihya. He enumerates the bliss of Paradise: the physical pleasures, the reunion with loved ones, the peace and safety, the unending duration — and then, in a passage of extraordinary spiritual beauty, he presents all of these as a candle before the sun compared to the greatest joy of Paradise: the vision of God (al-ru'ya). Those who see God in Paradise, the hadith says, will forget every other pleasure and want only to gaze. Al-Ghazali closes the Ihya with this vision — the face of God — as the final destination of the entire journey.
