Kalimullah
Definition
Kalimullah — the one to whom Allah spoke directly — is Musa's unique title in the prophetic hierarchy, distinguishing the nature of his revelation from that of other prophets. While most prophets received revelation through the angel Jibril, Musa heard Allah's words without intermediary at Mount Sinai. This direct speech (kalam) is the basis of the divine name 'al-Mutakallim' and one of the most debated topics in Islamic theology — debates about its nature, its mode, and its relationship to the divine essence that occupied scholars for centuries. For Ibn Kathir, the title kalimullah is sufficient: it marks Musa as uniquely honored in a way that the Quran itself confirms and that no subsequent theological debate can diminish.
