Karāmah

A miracle of a saint — a supernatural event, perception, or capacity granted by Allah to a righteous person as a sign of divine favour and nearness, distinct from the miracles of prophets. Al-Nawawi devotes a chapter of the Garden to affirming the reality of karamat against those who denied them, while carefully situating them: they are not the goal of the spiritual path, not a reliable measure of spiritual station, and not something that can be sought or manufactured. The greatest karāmah, al-Nawawi quotes the scholars as saying, is istiqāmah — consistent straightness in obedience — because it requires sustained effort over a lifetime, while visible miracles may be granted in a moment without indicating the sustained quality of the person's inner life.
