Luqma
Al-Ghazali uses the luqma — the individual morsel of food — as the unit of analysis for the etiquettes of eating, describing how each morsel should be small, chewed thoroughly, not placed in the mouth before the previous one is swallowed, and preceded by bismillah at the beginning of the meal. The attention to the individual morsel is characteristic of al-Ghazali's method: by slowing down the act of eating to its smallest components and surrounding each with consciousness, he is training the eater to bring deliberate awareness to what is usually performed entirely on autopilot. Awareness of each morsel is training for awareness in every act.
As understood in the classical tradition of Imam al-Ghazali and the scholars of his school.
