Mawājid
Definition
Mawajid are the multiple, varied inner states that the spiritual path produces — the full range of heart-movements that authentic spiritual experience generates. Al-Ghazali uses this term to emphasise that the spiritual life is not emotionally monotone: it produces grief and joy, contraction and expansion, fear and hope, longing and contentment, all in their proper season and proportion. The sama' that produces a full range of authentic mawajid in a prepared heart is a powerful spiritual tool; the sama' that produces only one recurring emotional experience — particularly if that experience is pleasant excitement — should be examined carefully for what it is actually stirring.
