Muʿālaja al-Qalb

Definition

Mualaja al-qalb — the treatment of the heart — is al-Ghazali's comprehensive term for the therapeutic work that the diseases of hiqd and hasad require. Unlike physical disease, which can sometimes be addressed by treating symptoms, spiritual disease requires treatment of the root: the pride and ego that produces both rancor (the sense that one deserves not to have been injured) and envy (the sense that one deserves more than one has received). The treatment involves both inner work — changing the thoughts and beliefs that sustain the disease — and outer practice — behaviours that act against the disease's impulses until the impulses weaken.

As understood in the classical tradition of Imam al-Ghazali and the scholars of his school.
