Musharaya

Definition

Musharaya — literally 'making a deal' or 'contracting' — is al-Ghazali's term for the morning practice of entering the day with a deliberate, conscious negotiation with one's own soul. The practitioner sets the terms of the day: this day I intend to perform these obligations, avoid these transgressions, maintain this level of God-consciousness. The musharaya is not merely planning but a genuine inner contract — a firm commitment made at the start of each day, with full awareness of what will be required to keep it. Al-Ghazali treats this morning practice as the foundation of the entire daily spiritual routine.

As understood in the classical tradition of Imam al-Ghazali and the scholars of his school.
