Qaḍāʾ wa Qadar
Definition
Qaḍa wa Qadar is the doctrine of divine decree — the belief that Allah has knowledge of all things before they occur, that He has written everything in the Preserved Tablet, that nothing happens outside His will, and that He is the creator of all human actions even as humans bear genuine moral responsibility for their choices. Al-Ghazali navigates this profound theological terrain carefully, affirming both divine omnipotence and human accountability, and insisting that correct understanding of qadar leads not to passive fatalism but to a deep tranquility — the peace of knowing that every moment is in the hands of the All-Knowing.
