Qadar
Definition
Qadar — divine decree — is the theological backdrop against which all of tawakkul takes place. The belief that God has decreed all things — that nothing happens outside His knowledge, will, and plan — is what makes trust in God rationally defensible rather than psychologically naive. Al-Ghazali's treatment of qadar in this book is practical rather than philosophical: he is less interested in the theological puzzle of free will and more interested in the spiritual effect of truly believing in divine decree. When one genuinely believes that God has already accounted for every detail of one's situation, the anxiety of control — the frantic need to manage all outcomes — begins to dissolve.
