Sabr al-Ismail
Definition
The patience of Ismail is qualitatively different from the endurance of most prophetic figures in the Qisas — it was not the patience of someone who had no choice, but the voluntary, articulate patience of a young man who heard the most frightening command possible and responded: 'Do what you have been commanded — you will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient.' Ibn Kathir emphasizes the consciousness and deliberateness of this response: Ismail could have refused, could have argued, could have asked for more time. Instead, he submitted immediately and completely, offering his own cooperation to the command that would take his life. This active, chosen patience becomes the spiritual model for every believer who faces a trial they did not choose.
