Shahwa al-Khafia
Definition
Shahwa khafiya — hidden desire — refers to the deeply concealed layer of riya that al-Ghazali considers the most difficult to detect and treat: the desire for reputation that operates so far below the level of conscious awareness that the person genuinely does not know it is there. This hidden desire manifests not in deliberate performance but in subtle adjustments: the slight strengthening of the prayer when footsteps approach, the mild disappointment when a good deed goes unnoticed, the gentle pleasure at overhearing one's piety mentioned approvingly. These responses reveal the presence of riya at a level that the person's conscious self-understanding has not yet acknowledged.
