Shukr
Shukr is not a feeling of vague appreciation but a structured three-part act: first, recognition (maʿrifa) that the blessing has come from God and God alone; second, an interior state of joy (farah) that is oriented not toward the blessing itself but toward the Giver of the blessing; and third, the active use of the blessing (amal) in ways that please its Giver. Al-Ghazali insists that gratitude must flow through all three channels simultaneously. A person who feels good about their blessings but uses them in disobedience has performed the first two without the third — the gratitude is incomplete. True shukr transforms every gift into a vehicle for worship.
As understood in the classical tradition of Imam al-Ghazali and the scholars of his school.
