Sual al-Qabr
Definition
Sual al-qabr — the questioning of the grave — refers to the examination that the believer faces immediately after death, when the angels Munkar and Nakir ask three questions: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your prophet?' Al-Ghazali presents this not as a doctrinal fact to be memorized but as a pressing practical reality that should shape how one lives. The person who can answer these questions with a calm, confident heart in the moment of death is the person who has lived so consistently with those answers that they have become the foundation of their being — not a theological formula retrieved from memory but a lived reality confirmed by a lifetime of practice.
