Tafakkur

تفكر
Definition

Tafakkur is the sustained, focused use of the God-given faculty of reason to perceive divine realities — not merely to accumulate information but to arrive at a transformed understanding that changes the one who reflects. Al-Ghazali presents it as the highest voluntary spiritual practice because it employs the noblest faculty (the heart-intellect, known as the aql) in its noblest activity (perceiving truth) for its noblest purpose (knowing God and the nature of reality). He distinguishes it from ordinary intellectual activity: tafakkur is not debate, memorization, or argumentation — it is reflection that genuinely changes the reflecting heart, increasing its awareness of God, its awareness of itself, or its understanding of the nature of existence.

As understood in the classical tradition of Imam al-Ghazali and the scholars of his school.
