Tafaqqud al-Ahwal
Tafaqqud al-ahwal — regularly checking the states (ahwal) of the heart — is a specific dimension of muhasaba focused on the interior rather than the exterior. It is not enough to review one's outward actions; the serious practitioner must also check the state of their heart: Is there pride lurking in my generosity? Is there riya in my prayer? Is there envy behind my discomfort with someone else's success? This interior audit is more demanding and more revelatory than the examination of outward acts, because the heart is more skilled at concealment and more resistant to honest scrutiny than the outer self.
As understood in the classical tradition of Imam al-Ghazali and the scholars of his school.
