Taghfīl
Definition
Taghfil — the inducing of heedlessness — is al-Ghazali's description of one of Shaitan's primary strategies for producing ghurur: keeping the person occupied with the surface of religious life (the form of worship, the knowledge of doctrine, the social reputation for piety) while preventing genuine examination of the depth. The busy religious person who attends prayers, reads Islamic literature, participates in religious discussions, and maintains a reputation for piety, but who never sits alone with honest self-examination, is precisely the target of taghfil — a person whose religious activity has become the mechanism through which their spiritual self-deception is maintained.
