Taḥallī
Tahalli is the second phase of spiritual discipline — the active cultivation of positive virtues to fill the space that takhalli has cleared. Al-Ghazali argues that the removal of vices is not an end in itself: the heart emptied of pride but not filled with humility, the heart emptied of miserliness but not filled with generosity, will simply be refilled by the next available passion. Tahalli requires the deliberate, persistent practice of each virtue opposite to one's identified vices — practising humility when pride would be easier, practising generosity when the miser instinct pulls toward hoarding, practising patience when anger would feel more natural.
As understood in the classical tradition of Imam al-Ghazali and the scholars of his school.
