Ṭahāra
Definition
Tahara is the comprehensive Arabic term for purity — encompassing both the physical state of cleanliness required for valid worship and the spiritual state of inner purity that is worship's ultimate goal. Al-Ghazali insists that tahara has four concentric levels: purification of the body from filth and ritual impurity; purification of the limbs from sinful actions; purification of the heart from blameworthy character traits; and purification of the innermost self from everything other than Allah. Each level of physical tahara is meant to remind the Muslim of the deeper purification that is always under way.
