Tajwīd
Definition
Tajwid is the science of reciting the Quran according to the precise rules of pronunciation passed down from the Prophet ﷺ through an unbroken chain of teachers — rules governing the lengthening of vowels, the characteristics of specific letters, the pausing points, and the assimilation of sounds. Al-Ghazali values tajwid but cautions against its becoming a substitute for the inner quality of recitation. The person who recites with perfect tajwid but no tadabbur has mastered the container while neglecting the contents; the person who recites with heartfelt engagement but imperfect tajwid is closer to the spirit of what recitation is for, though ideally one should cultivate both.
