Takhallī

Definition

Takhalli is the first phase of spiritual discipline — the emptying of the heart of its vices, its blameworthy traits, and its spiritual diseases. Al-Ghazali presents it as a prerequisite for the second phase: you cannot fill a vessel that is already full of something else. The person who attempts to cultivate positive virtues without first addressing the vices that occupy the heart's space will find the virtues have nowhere to settle. Takhalli requires honest self-diagnosis, the humility to acknowledge what one finds, and the sustained willingness to apply whatever disciplines are required to remove each specific vice.

As understood in the classical tradition of Imam al-Ghazali and the scholars of his school.
