Takhfīf al-Akl
Takhfif al-akl — the lightening or reduction of eating — is the specific dietary discipline that al-Ghazali prescribes as the foundational practice of soul-training. He is not prescribing starvation but the deliberate habit of eating below comfortable satiety: leaving the table before the desire for food is fully satisfied, avoiding the elaborate and varied meals that stimulate the appetite beyond genuine hunger, and fasting regularly enough to keep the appetite trained rather than dominant. This practice, sustained over time, produces a person for whom food is fuel rather than pleasure — and whose heart is correspondingly freer.
As understood in the classical tradition of Imam al-Ghazali and the scholars of his school.
