Tartīl
Definition
Tartil is the Quranic command to recite 'in a slow, measured, distinct manner' — the precise pace that allows each letter, word, and verse to be properly articulated and properly absorbed. Al-Ghazali argues that tartil is a spiritual prescription, not merely an aesthetic one: the slow, deliberate pace of tartil forces the reciter to be present to each word rather than rushing toward the finish of the page. The fast, technically flawless recitation that completes the entire Quran in a few hours may be legally valid and even praised in certain contexts, but it is not the mode that produces the depth of understanding and felt response that the Quran is designed to generate.
