Tashkil al-Aqli
Definition
Tashkil al-aqli refers to the deliberate cultivation and formation of the intellect through sustained contemplation — the process by which the thinking faculty is trained, deepened, and refined through regular practice of tafakkur. Al-Ghazali insists that the capacity for genuine contemplation is not fixed at birth but developed through practice: the person who regularly engages in tafakkur develops an increasingly refined capacity to perceive divine signs, to follow chains of reflection, and to arrive at genuine insight. The person who never practices tafakkur remains at the surface of experience, unable to read the signs that surround them at every moment.
