Tawāḍuʿ al-Nabī
Definition
Tawadu al-nabi — the Prophet's ﷺ humility — is presented by al-Ghazali as one of the most astonishing dimensions of the prophetic character, given that the Prophet ﷺ was simultaneously the recipient of divine revelation, the leader of a rapidly growing community, and the possessor of the greatest spiritual station any human being has occupied. Despite all of this, the Prophet ﷺ refused special treatment: he sat on the floor with his companions, mended his own sandals, helped with household chores, and responded to criticism without defensiveness. This humility was not performance but the natural expression of a heart that genuinely knew before Allah its own smallness.
