Tawājud
Definition
Tawajud is the deliberate seeking or inducing of wajd — the attempt to produce the spiritual ecstasy of listening through intentional effort rather than waiting for it to arise spontaneously. Al-Ghazali's treatment of tawajud is nuanced: for the person who genuinely seeks to strengthen their orientation toward Allah and uses the intentional turning toward spiritual content as a form of spiritual exercise, tawajud is permissible and potentially beneficial. For the person who induces the appearance of spiritual states for social effect — to be seen as spiritually advanced — it is a form of deception. The distinction between the two lies entirely in the interior of the person practising it.
